The exhibition is a project of the Ministry of Culture of Macedonia.
Multimedia engagement with classical subjects
Current positions by artists from Macedonia and Russia
Two artists from Macedonia in dialogue with two artists from Russia in the German capital, Berlin – with this project the young Republic of Macedonia underlines its presence on the international art scene.
Jovan Balov lives in Berlin, his compatriot Novica Trajkovski in Skopje.
Their joint project “Duel” (“Duell”) is a dialogue in the form of painting, photography and video art.
In Trajkovski’s works the image of the cross dominates, a reflection on the political situation in his homeland. It is his first major exhibition in Germany.
Jovan Balov’s painting links the sculptures by Karl Friedrich Schinkel on the Schlossbrücke in Berlin with neoclassical fabrics. Against these he sets large-format photographs of Macedonian soldiers posing as masked warriors.
Genia Chef and Olga Tobreluts come from Russia.
Genia Chef lives in Berlin, Olga Tobreluts in St Petersburg.
Tobreluts’s works are computer modifications of ancient Greek sculptures which, through digital processing, become modern heroes. She is a representative of the Novaya Akademiya (New Academy) in St Petersburg.
Genia Chef, too, is in close contact with this artistic movement.
His triptych “Millennium” and an installation of three-dimensional computer panoramas are digital interpretations of the classical theme “Danse de la Mort”.
