Cross-Draught in the Löwenpalais

8 February – 9 March 2003

Cross-Draught in the Löwenpalais

Young artists from the class of Prof. Rebecca Horn are showing their work in the renovated rooms of the Löwenpalais in Grunewald. For the second time since 1998, this house is a place of artistic exploration for a new group of students from this class. This generation, too, places its emphasis on environments, installations, videos, photographs and performances. In doing so, the house and its spatial features become part of the artistic intentions. Thus the sculpture “W” by Nies Schmatzler grows out through a window into the open; in the former caretaker’s room in the basement, Kathrin Kunz creates a new space, “Growths” (“Wucherungen”). From a gripping crime film about a missing detective (Judy Ross) and contemplative video installations (Barbara Ueber, Amelia Seymour) to exaggerated photographs by Ali Kaaf, and performances by Elena Kovylina and Justin Miles, a broad spectrum of artistic exploration is presented. The seventeen artists are throwing the windows wide open, even before the annual spring clean, to let a strong wind of new energies blow through the Löwenpalais.

Special events accompanying this exhibition

On the occasion of our current exhibition “Cross-Draught in the Löwenpalais” (“Durchzug im Löwenpalais”), which presents works by students from Rebecca Horn’s class, we have launched a new series of events:

“Artists Talk About Their Work” (“Künstler sprechen über ihre Werke”)

Creating this new series was very close to our hearts. Since we repeatedly encountered incomprehension among our audience, we looked for a way to make it easier for you to take in contemporary art through direct contact with the artists.

The absolutely necessary training of the eye is based on recognising novel forms of representation and their contexts. From this a new way of seeing arises, through which to grasp these contents.

To ease your entry into this new world, or to deepen it, the artists from Rebecca Horn’s class will be answering your questions about their work over the next two weeks.
