George Maciunas: Fluxus Art Amusement

George MaciunasSelection from the Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection

This exhibition showed a selection of items from the Fluxus collection of Gilbert and Lila Silverman, Detroit. It offered a subjective insight into the Fluxus process and the central role that George Maciunas played in the movement. The exhibition itself included almost all the posters for Fluxus performances from the decade 1961 to 1971, a few photographs of Fluxus performances, most of the Fluxus manifestos, Maciunas’s overview chart explaining what Fluxus is and how other movements arose, and a large number of original works by Ben Vautier.

The exhibition aimed to bring the development and diversity of “Fluxus Art” closer to visitors.

Viewers were to be given the opportunity to empathise more deeply with the Fluxus movement.

Following its successful presentation at the Randers Kunstmuseum in Denmark, the Stiftung Starke managed to bring this much-noted international exhibition to Berlin at almost no cost. Many art lovers from Germany and abroad who were in the city at the time for the art fair “European Art Forum Berlin” took the opportunity to visit the Fluxus exhibition at the Stiftung Starke. During the fair, open-studio days were held at the Löwenpalais, so that visitors could also see the work of artists supported by the foundation.

This exhibition enabled the new generations of artists who have since emerged to become acquainted with the roots and origins of the Fluxus movement and to find inspiration for their own artistic work.
