Photo / Text Works
Marina Makowski
3–26 November 1994

This was the first exhibition to take place in the large room that had been made available behind the window spaces used until then. Marina Makowski’s photo/text works break the usual bounds of the discipline of photography/video, achieving an astonishing synthesis of aesthetics and scientific fascination. Her mostly very large photo/text works come into being in several phases. Reworked photographs are filmed again; for example, she sets heroic stills from the Third Reich against a backdrop of menacing magnified cells, thereby venturing into stylistic border territory, and underlays them with passages of text drawn from abstract as well as scientifically grounded theses. These works do not leave the viewer untouched, which is also what the artist intends, for she is trying to explore the problems of human existence.
