“E la Luna”
2 April 2005
An Italian singer makes music with a German guitarist, happens to know a cellist as well, sings them a song by Mina, and before long the three are making a little more music together; it grooves, the three of them, Italian songs. Eva brings songs she has known for a long time and sings them in a way that Holger and Martin do not know them. Arrangements emerge, often jazzy, but not academic, not striving to drive the schlager-like charm out of the canzoni altogether. Even songs written for Sanremo can, in their kitsch, strike something true. ...e la luna? The name says how the trio approaches and takes on its material: questioningly, but not as a know-it-all, clear-sighted about clichés and expectations, but without caricaturing. In this way they succeed in giving form to Italy and the ideas of Italy. A form, moreover, in which all three musicians manage to tell the stories and pictures with their own specific means of expression. It is only logical that the project also develops towards pieces of its own, inspired and independent. The CD reinforces the feeling I have had ever since I got to know ...e la luna?: it seems as if the name had been waiting for this music (or the other way round), as if a new, shimmering light were falling on something familiar. Eccoci qua: ...e la luna?
