On 9 November 2014 it will be 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and with it the end of the GDR dictatorship and of the surveillance state run by the GDR’s Ministry for State Security.

In precise, large-format photographs, the two artists show rooms that the GDR’s Ministry for State Security used for interrogations over several decades, the prison cells in Bautzen for political prisoners, and the offices of Erich Mielke, then Minister for State Security. And the stored files in the Birthler Authority in Berlin – endless stacks of records of control and espionage, of division and subversion – bear witness to the regime’s total exercise of power over forty years.
