Sculptures – Dieter Finke

SculpturesWith the sculptures of Dieter Finke, the Stiftung Starke presented, as its last exhibition of 1993, an artist who, through the foundation’s artist support programme, had been able to use rooms at the Löwenpalais free of charge for living and working for over a year.

Finke, who was born in Berlin, studied at the Berlin HDK as a master student of the famous animal sculptor Renée Sintenis. His exhibition at the Löwenpalais also included animal sculptures which, through their filigree lightness and fragmentary character, document the artist’s unmistakable hand. In addition, his sculptures in wood showed a reduction to the essential: concentration and austerity, which is also the artist’s message. They are towering, bizarre, rugged figures of warriors and fighters – angular, narrow, wounded and emaciated, as though in a struggle lasting since time immemorial everything that covers, warms and humanises them had been burned, rotted away or torn off – mute witnesses of past catastrophes and knowing harbingers of apocalypses to come.

Dieter Finke’s preoccupation with space and architecture carries over into his exhibition concept, and the creation of new spaces thus made this artist’s exhibition a self-contained total work of art.

The printing of the posters was supported by sponsors.
