Literary Evening at the Löwenpalais
16 August 2013
Reading Stage: The Best of “Berlin Alexanderplatz”
The story of Franz Biberkopf – his struggle, his fall, his redemption – is the most famous portrait of manners and morals in our city. As gripping as Alfred Döblin’s account of the trials and tribulations of the little man amid the roar of the big city, so rousingly do Irena Heliana Jandris, Axel Hartwig and Christoph Bleidt read and act out the finest scenes from the classic novel of 1929.
The literary evening at the Löwenpalais in Grunewald is the opening and benefit event for the reading of the entire book from 1 to 29 September beneath the Berlin TV Tower. Under the motto “READING CITY VIOLENCE” (“LESEN STADT GEWALT”), twenty performers read for an Alexanderplatz free of violence. United as a trio for the first time, Jandris, Hartwig and Bleidt bring the scenes from Berlin’s demi-monde to the stage as a timeless big-city drama. Free admission – donations welcome.
