Concert Schiller Evening at the Löwenpalais

19 June 2005

As part of the Schiller Year, students of the Hanns Eisler School of Music, from the voice and vocal-coaching classes of Nena Brzakovich and Claar ter Horst, sing settings of poems by Friedrich von Schiller. Two hundred years ago, on 9 May 1805, the great dramatist, poet, philosopher and historian Friedrich von Schiller died in Weimar at the age of 46. Many composers set his poems to music in his own time and later. From the wealth of songs that resulted, the singing and interpretation classes of Nena Brzakovich and Claar ter Horst will perform a selection in a song recital.

Compositions by Schubert, Reichardt, Zelter, Mendelssohn, Fanny Hensel, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Crushmann and others can be heard. Well-known settings of ballads such as “The Glove” (“Der Handschuh”, Schumann), but also lesser-known short poems set to melody, will be heard. Several poems will also be performed in different settings.
