Concert “Moon of Alabama”
26 May 2005
Songs from “The Threepenny Opera” (“Die Dreigroschenoper”), “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” (“Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny”), “Happy End” and love poems of the 20th-century avant-garde. In this performance such famous songs as “Pirate Jenny” (“Die Seeräuberjenny”), “The Ballad of Mack the Knife” (“Die Moritat von Mackie Messer”), the “Barbara Song”, the “Bilbao Song”, the “Sailor Song” (“Der Matrosensong”), “Surabaya Johnny” (“Das Lied vom Surabaya-Johnny”) or the “Ballad of Sexual Dependency” (“Ballade von der sexuellen Hörigkeit”) are linked with love poems. Some of these poems, above all “The Legend of the Whore Evelyn Roe” (“Die Legende der Dirne Evlyn Roe”) (Brecht), are musically improvised in song form. What emerges is a web of the classic compositions of Kurt Weill, of the musical “reinventions” that are unique to every performance, and of texts about the coming into being and passing away of love, which is inseparable from social conditions and yet seems to be universally valid.
