The Player – HOMO LUDENS

Dear friends of the arts,

I came back only last week from the Yoko Ono retrospective at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, where the curator there, Dr Ingrid Pfeiffer, together with Jon Hendricks, has created a sensational exhibition on Yoko Ono’s life’s work. It makes us aware of the great influence the artist has had on conceptual art, and what a remarkable pioneer she was, and still is, for contemporary art.

Here in Berlin her concert then took place at the Volksbühne last Sunday, and on Monday we celebrated her birthday with a few friends at the Paris Bar.

Still a little worn out from all these events, I am now devoting all my energy to our resident artist David O’Kane, a master-class student of Neo Rauch and the recipient of numerous international awards, although he was born only in 1985.

What impresses me most about David is his versatility: with almost virtuoso ease he moves between painting, video, performance, photography and installation. Although some artists would lose themselves in such diversity, he shows particular strength in every direction. He does not blend the different modes of expression, but draws on different elements for different needs. As in Ono’s work, this produces entirely different pieces that could really have been made by several artists.

We have decided to open the exhibition of

David O’Kane

on

Saturday, 23 February 2013

at 7 pm

because of the preview of the Martin Kippenberger exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof on Friday.

As you would expect from the Stiftung Starke, we shall of course celebrate a little afterwards in the Löwenpalais Lounge.

After Saturday, the exhibition can still be seen for a further two months. As I shall be at the Löwenpalais myself that day, I would be delighted to welcome many of you there.
