Albrecht Gehse
Painting
11 May – 22 June 1995

Gehse, an impulsive Leipzig painter and pupil of Bernhard Heisig, the GDR’s “painter prince”, paints strongly coloured, thickly impasted pictures of a kind that can hardly be found elsewhere among the young generation at present, and the reaction of the visitors at the opening was accordingly strong. One is reminded of Goya, Corinth and, of course, of his teacher Heisig. Gehse is not sparing with colour and revels – as Christoph Tannert called it – in “colour sauce”. His admirers and collectors value him as a saviour of lost paradises.
