Javier Vallhonrat: The Path and the Grid

The Path and the Grid is a new project by the renowned Spanish photographer Javier Vallhonrat, devoted to the figure of the Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvator and his relationship with nature. The exhibition includes both photographs and drawings.

Javier Vallhonrat takes the notion of multiplicity as his starting point, analogous to the multiplicity of the Archduke’s views, experiences and interests regarding, with and on the Balearic Islands, especially Mallorca and the Serra de Tramuntana. In doing so, he draws a connection between the turbulent times of the day and the extraordinary landscape. In the most varied ways, the project seeks to capture a passionate, many-sided fascination, insights and experiences – ultimately a love, passion and devotion lasting decades, whose fruits Mallorca still enjoys today in the form of numerous buildings and landscape interventions.

Supported by the Balearic regional government and the Island Council, in cooperation with other private and institutional sponsors, the exhibition forms part of the cultural activities marking the 100th anniversary of the Archduke’s death. The so-called Any de l’Arxiduc (Year of the Archduke) dedicates a varied, international cultural programme in 2015 to the naturalist, nature lover and first promoter of tourism on the Balearic Islands. Afterwards, The Path and the Grid will also be shown in Prague and Palma de Mallorca.

The artist will be present.
