“Robert Schumann Songs”

1 March 2007

Repertoire:

On Thursday, 1 March, at 7.30 pm, the soprano Andrea Chudak, the tenor Fabian Martino and the pianist Claudia Fox will perform a song recital of works by Robert Schumann at the Löwenpalais.

Robert Schumann lived from 1810 to 1856, and last year marked the 150th anniversary of his death. On this occasion the Berlin soprano, the Munich tenor and the Berlin pianist have devoted themselves to a programme of his songs.
Three cycles will be heard this evening: “A Woman’s Love and Life” (“Frauenliebe und -leben”), Op. 42, after poems by Adalbert von Chamisso; Op. 104, after poems by Elisabeth Kulmann; and “A Poet’s Love” (“Dichterliebe”), Op. 48, after poems by Heinrich Heine.
Of these cycles, Op. 104 is a work that is performed only rarely in comparison with the other two song collections. This late composition by Schumann is rich in intense melodies and impressions that are very stirring, heartfelt and moving.
