White – 20 Years of the Stiftung Starke

WHITE (“WEISS”) – the exhibition marking the 20th anniversary of the Stiftung Starke
The anniversary exhibition of the Stiftung Starke offers an insight into the broad spectrum of artistic engagement with white. In keeping with the foundation’s concept, variations of white are presented through different art styles and forms of expression, such as painting, sculpture, video art and installation, and set in dialogue with one another. The works take up white as a central myth of modernism and confront the viewer with both its simplicity and its complexity.

To mark its 20th anniversary, the Stiftung Starke, in collaboration with the Institute for Cultural and Media Management at the Freie Universität Berlin, is holding the anniversary exhibition “WHITE”.
Since the beginning of modernism, white has been discussed as a colour, a non-colour and the sum of all colours, and its symbolic and metaphorical meanings have been questioned.

The clarity and purity of white, in the artistic tradition of Kazimir Malevich and Robert Rauschenberg, thus meets the Renaissance architecture of the Löwenpalais in Grunewald. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, the “WHITE” of the exhibition symbolises a creative new beginning for the Stiftung Starke and an expectant look towards the future.
