Patrick Lemke worked at the Stiftung Starke as an Artist in Residence from 2007 to 2009. In the exhibition “Playgrounds” he shows paintings with motifs of oversized playing fields and archaeological sites. The picture backgrounds recall illustrations of game boards or statistical diagrams; circles from scientific depictions of sound waves appear. In his paintings, Patrick Lemke plays with forms and figures that seem to move freely within the pictorial space. He works the canvas with lacquer and turpentine until he has achieved an unusually strong perspectival background, on which real objects appear to be set floating.
