Peinture “Trust Your Eyes”
9 May – 6 June 1997
A call to return to first principles and to sensuality. An appeal to take the classical contemplation of pictures as the yardstick of artistic discernment. An exclamation mark aimed at the multimedia gag formalists!
Four young Berlin painters have joined forces to formulate and demonstrate this claim.
Cristina Canale from Brazil, Jean Yves Klein from Canada, Rolf Behm and Roland Deleau from the south of Germany: Berliners, in other words, of the cosmopolitan spirit that has always given the art of this city so many impulses well worth seeing.
Looking at art should be a matter of trained seeing, not of trendy opinion. The four have set themselves the task of putting this literally before our eyes.
A fundamentally painterly attitude, the pursuit of painting’s classical attributes, the illusion of space and of bodies, together with all the small and great sensory sensations on the painted surface, are made visible at two exhibition venues.
