On the South African opera scene:
South Africa is a country with a rich and colourful culture. The performing arts play a prominent role in the development of the new South African consciousness and of South Africa’s newly emerging cultural identity. The word “opera” means “work” in Latin – and for many South Africans, work is the only way out of poverty. But opera is not only work; opera is also the realisation and representation of cultural stories. South Africa has a multitude of stories to tell, which play an important role in passing African history down from generation to generation. Little by little, more and more of South Africa’s many-sided history is being told through the medium of opera, which in recent years – also thanks to the opening of the concert halls to the black majority of the population – has been enjoying a boom in society. A further positive development is only possible through the promotion and support of young talent, as the German-South African Master Class Programme, for example, has made its mission.
