Concert “Hope Remains for Later”

15 October 2005

Franz Kafka, “Hope Remains for Later” (“Die Hoffnung bleibt für später”): love, fear and longing told in letters, scenes and music. At the centre of this staged reading about Franz Kafka (3 July 1883 – 3 June 1924), who throughout his life was torn between the desire for commitment and the fear of true closeness and physicality, are Kafka’s letters to his probably greatest love, the Czech Milena Jesenská, and her desperate letters to Kafka’s friend and publisher Max Brod. In these letters, besides longing, passionate feelings and the impossibility of an exclusive relationship, the character of Kafka is also reflected as a warm-hearted, modest, intelligent but also very fragile personality.
