*Two and a half thousand years ago, philosophers dreamed that the fabric of the cosmos
was woven from four primal forces: wind, fire, water and earth. Today’s science
knows other models and deeper insights into matter and the elements. Yet as symbols of the
search for life, as a language of the world and its secrets, these four elements still
shine on within us. The drawing of the wind’s breath, the flaring of fire, the flowing of
water, the gathering of earth – in every gesture of everyday life, in every movement of being
we encounter their traces, far beyond tangible matter.
The Sonata for Four Elements, composed by Chia-Chen Chiang in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic,
is a musical mirror of these ancient forces. It invites us to reflect on the fragile balance
between humanity and the universe – and at the same time bows to the thinkers who,
2,500 years ago, set the dream of the elements into the world.
