The Fair Maid of the Mill
21 September 2006

The story is typically Romantic: a young journeyman miller is out on his travels. He follows the course of a brook, which finally leads him to a mill. There he falls unhappily in love with a girl, the daughter of his new master. But the love affair he longs for with the beautiful miller’s daughter, who is beyond his reach, comes to nothing. At first she does not seem averse to him, but then she turns to a huntsman, since the latter has the more respected occupation and embodies masculinity and potency. In despair, the unhappy miller drowns himself in the brook.
