“My photographs question the memory of a place – a distorted, imagined reality – created from spaces of ambiguity. I play with the receptiveness of my viewers’ minds, who have to verify or falsify something that actually makes no sense.” (Tom Leighton)
Tom Leighton’s large-format works depict places in major cities that hold particular significance for us. Leighton does not reproduce them one to one, however, but “plays” with the attention of his viewers. In perfectly staged compositions he assembles different places into a new architecture, creating new places that at first seem familiar, then bewilder us and finally leave us amazed. Coming from professional photography, Tom Leighton uses his technical skill to stage his art flawlessly. Almost imperceptibly he creates something new that unfolds its own aesthetic and radiates an incredible beauty.
